On Sunday, December 3, 2023, a historic event took place in the area of Widnes. Four of the iconic cooling towers of Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, which had been a distinctive part of the Mersey skyline since 1971, were demolished by controlled explosive techniques12. The demolition marked the end of an era for the power station, which had closed in March 2020 after nearly 50 years of operation.
The blowdown of the towers, which were 115 metres high and made of concrete, was scheduled to take place between 8 am and 12 pm, in order to minimise the impact for local Widnes and Runcorn residents and reduce traffic disruption in the area. However, many people who wanted to witness the spectacle were disappointed by the heavy fog that obscured the view2. Only a small number of properties to the immediate north of the site were affected by the demolition, and the residents were evacuated for safety reasons.
The demolition of the towers was carried out by P.P. O’Connor, a civil engineering and groundworks specialist, who had been appointed by Peel NRE, the developer of the site. Peel NRE has plans to regenerate the former power station site into a mixed-use development, which will include around 250 acres of employment use and approximately 860 new homes. The regeneration project is expected to create hundreds of new jobs and secure future investment for Warrington, Halton and the wider region.
